Pre-Workshop Tasks

Please do the following three tasks before the first day of the workshop (September 13).

  1. Watch “Minds of Our Own” clip from this link: https://www.learner.org/series/minds-of-our-own/
  2. Scroll down and click on a program to watch at least the first 30 min of one of these clips (whichever you prefer):
    • “1. Can we believe our eyes?” -- based on physics concept
    • “2. Lessons from thin air” -- based on biology concept
    •    [You are welcome to watch the whole clip(s) if you have time!]

While you watch, please take notes on the following:

    • What do you think are the main messages of these video clips?
    • What did you find in the video very striking / surprising?
We will discuss these on the first day of the workshop. Please bring your notes.

  3. Please complete this RTOP questionnaire, ASSUMING that you are observing yourself in a TYPICAL class that you have recently taught.
    • Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) was originally developed as an observation tool to provide a standardized means for detecting the degree that a class is reformed. We will ask you to fill this questionnaire again after the workshop. The aim is to see how your teaching practice may (or may not) change. The collected data may be used anonymously to assess the effectiveness of the workshop for future publications. (Reference: http://physicsed.buffalostate.edu/AZTEC/RTOP/RTOP_full/about_RTOP.html)

  4. Please think about your course(s) that you teach and would like to improve, and list the following in this online survey form. This survey is designed to help you while creating a lesson plan during the workshop.
    • 3 topics that students find difficult to learn
    • 3 teaching strategies that are working well
    • 3 challenges that you would like to address

Please Note:

  • We will be using Google drive during the workshop. If you do not have a google account associated with your email, please sign up for one from this link before the workshop.
  • Please bring your laptop or tablet to the workshop sessions.
